Its shape ranges from oblong to round,\nthe colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red,\ndepending on the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some\npeople regard the durian as having a pleasantly sweet fragrance, whereas others\nfind the aroma overpowering with an unpleasant odour. The smell evokes\nreactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described\nvariously as rotten onions,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turpentine\">turpentine<\/a>,\nand raw sewage. The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several\ndays, has led to the fruit&#8217;s banishment from certain hotels and public\ntransportation in southeast Asia. However, the first studies to examine mallow phylogeny using molecular\ndata found that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tribe_(biology)\">tribe<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durioneae\">Durioneae<\/a>&nbsp;should\nbe placed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subfamily\">subfamily<\/a>&nbsp;Helicteroideae\nof an expanded Malvaceae. The durian fruit\ncan hang from any branch, and matures roughly three months after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pollination\">pollination<\/a>.\nThe fruit can grow up to 30 centimetres (12&nbsp;in) long and 15 centimetres\n(6&nbsp;in) in diameter, and typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to\n7&nbsp;lb).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Brown-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;Its\nshape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and\nits flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on the species.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Brown-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;Among\nthe thirty known species of&nbsp;<em>Durio<\/em>, nine of them have been\nidentified as producing edible fruits:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_zibethinus\"><em>D.\nzibethinus<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_dulcis\"><em>D.\ndulcis<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_grandiflorus\"><em>D. grandiflorus<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_graveolens\"><em>D.\ngraveolens<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_kutejensis\"><em>D.\nkutejensis<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Durio_lowianus&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\"><em>Durio lowianus<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Durio_macrantha&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\"><em>D.\nmacrantha<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Durio_oxleyanus&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\"><em>D.\noxleyanus<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durio_testudinarius\"><em>D. testudinarius<\/em><\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-ACIAR-17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;There\nare many species for which the fruit has never been collected or properly\nexamined, however, so other species with edible fruit may exist.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Brown-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;The\ndurian is somewhat similar in appearance to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackfruit\">jackfruit<\/a>,\nan unrelated species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>D.\nzibethinus<\/em>&nbsp;is the only species commercially cultivated on a\nlarge scale and available outside of its native region. Since this species is\nopen-pollinated, it shows considerable diversity in fruit colour and odour,\nsize of flesh and seed, and tree&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phenology\">phenology<\/a>.\nIn the species name,&nbsp;<em>zibethinus<\/em>&nbsp;refers to the Indian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civet\">civet<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viverra_zibetha\"><em>Viverra\nzibetha<\/em><\/a>. There is disagreement over whether this name,\nbestowed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Linnaeus\">Linnaeus<\/a>, refers to civets\nbeing so fond of the durian that the fruit was used as bait to entrap them, or\nto the durian smelling like the civet.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Durian\nflowers are large and feathery with copious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nectar_(plant)\">nectar<\/a>,\nand give off a heavy, sour, and buttery odour. These features are typical of\nflowers pollinated by certain species of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bat\">bats<\/a>&nbsp;that\neat nectar and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pollen\">pollen<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;According\nto research conducted in Malaysia in the 1970s, durians were pollinated almost\nexclusively by cave fruit bats (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eonycteris\"><em>Eonycteris\nspelaea<\/em><\/a>);<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Brown-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;however,\na 1996 study indicated two species,&nbsp;<em>D. grandiflorus<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Durio_oblongus&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\"><em>D. oblongus<\/em><\/a>,\nwere pollinated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiderhunter\">spiderhunters<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nectariniidae\">Nectariniidae<\/a>)\nand another species,&nbsp;<em>D. kutejensis<\/em>, was pollinated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giant_honey_bee\">giant\nhoney bees<\/a>&nbsp;and birds as well as bats.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some\nscientists have hypothesised that the development of monothecate anthers and\nlarger flowers (compared to those of the remaining genera in Durioneae) in the\nclade consisting of&nbsp;<em>Durio, Boschia<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Cullenia<\/em>&nbsp;was\nin conjunction with a transition from beetle pollination to vertebrate\npollination.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-:1-11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cultivars<\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Durian&amp;action=edit&amp;section=4\">edit<\/a>]<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:D101_and_random_stock.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different\ncultivars of durian often have distinct colours. Each cultivar has a distinct taste and odour.\nMore than 200 cultivars of&nbsp;<em>D. zibethinus<\/em>&nbsp;exist in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mon\nThong is the most commercially sought after, for its thick, full-bodied creamy\nand mild sweet-tasting flesh with relatively moderate smell emitted and smaller\nseeds, while Chanee is the best in terms of its resistance to infection\nby&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phytophthora_palmivora\"><em>Phytophthora\npalmivora<\/em><\/a>. Kan Yao is somewhat less common, but prized for its\nlonger window of time when it is both sweet and odourless at the same time.\nAmong all the cultivars in Thailand, five are currently in large-scale\ncommercial cultivation: Chanee, Mon Thong, Kan Yao, Ruang, and Kradum.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Pibul-22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;Since\nthe 1920s, there have been more than 100 registered cultivars in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaysia\">Malaysia<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;and\nby 1992 there were up to 193;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-ReferenceA-24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;many\nsuperior cultivars have been identified through competitions held at the annual\nMalaysian Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism Show. This pulp is the edible\npart, and its consistence and flavour are indescribable. Conti<\/a>,\nwho travelled to south-eastern Asia in the 15th century.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-54\"><sup>[54]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;Translated\nfrom the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin\">Latin<\/a>&nbsp;in\nwhich&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poggio_Bracciolini\">Poggio Bracciolini<\/a>&nbsp;recorded\nde Conti&#8217;s travels: &#8220;They [people of Sumatra] have a green fruit which\nthey call durian, as big as a watermelon. Inside there are five things like\nelongated oranges, and resembling thick butter, with a combination of\nflavours.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-55\"><sup>[55]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\">Portuguese<\/a>physician&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garcia_de_Orta\">Garcia\nde Orta<\/a>&nbsp;described durians in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Col%C3%B3quios_dos_simples_e_drogas_da_India\"><em>Col\u00f3quios\ndos simples e drogas da India<\/em><\/a>published in 1563.\nIn 1741,&nbsp;<em>Herbarium Amboinense<\/em>&nbsp;by the German botanist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Eberhard_Rumphius\">Georg Eberhard\nRumphius<\/a>&nbsp;was published, providing the most detailed and\naccurate account of durians for over a century. The first seedlings were sent from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Botanic_Gardens,_Kew\">Royal Botanic\nGardens, Kew<\/a>, to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auguste_Saint-Arroman\">Auguste Saint-Arroman<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominica\">Dominica<\/a>&nbsp;in\n1884.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Agro-58\"><sup>[58]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\nsouth-eastern Asia, the durian has been cultivated for centuries at the village\nlevel, probably since the late 18th century, and commercially since the\nmid-20th century.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Morton-4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-Brown-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;In&nbsp;<em>My\nTropic Isle<\/em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australia\">Australian<\/a>&nbsp;author\nand&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naturalist\">naturalist<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_James_Banfield\">Edmund James Banfield<\/a>&nbsp;tells\nhow, in the early 20th century, a friend in Singapore sent him a durian seed,\nwhich he planted and cared for on his tropical island off the north coast\nof&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queensland\">Queensland<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durian#cite_note-59\"><sup>[59]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\n1949, the British botanist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E._J._H._Corner\">E.\nJ. H. Corner<\/a>&nbsp;published&nbsp;<em>The Durian Theory, or the\nOrigin of the Modern Tree<\/em>. His theory was that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoochorous\">endozoochory<\/a>&nbsp;(the\nenticement of animals to transport seeds in their stomach) arose before any\nother method of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biological_dispersal\">seed dispersal<\/a>,\nand that primitive ancestors of&nbsp;<em>Durio<\/em>&nbsp;species were the\nearliest practitioners of that dispersal method, in particular red durian (<em>D.\ndulcis<\/em>) exemplifying the primitive fruit of flowering plants. However, in\nmore recent circumscriptions of Durioneae, the tribe into which&nbsp;<em>Durio<\/em>&nbsp;and\nits sister taxa fall, fleshy arils and spiny fruits are derived within the\nclade. Some genera possess these characters, but others don&#8217;t.
